How does anyone learn to fly an ultralight aircraft?
Well that's got to be a very easy question.
First of all you go and find yourself an ultralight airport or ultralight club where they provide lessons for you to obtain your pilot's certificate.
Then you either hire or purchase a second hand ultralight airplane such as a Lazair, Challenger or Quicksilver aircraft.
Then in time you may wish to upgrade to a new ultralight or change models or learn how to fly ultralight helicopters or gyrocopters.
Whichever way you decide to go the proof is already out there - flying any type of ultralight is an unbeatable and a must do experience. Obviously nobody needs to tell this man!
Here you are going to locate a variety of means to review and research many different types of ultralights. Paragliders, gyrocopters, helicopters, amphibious aircraft, ultralights for commercial use, ultralights for rural or urban use (crop dusting or stock mustering), or for pleasure which is the main reason people purchase. However if you are fortunate enough to be able to take people for joy flights that always assists you to own one sooner.
Have you yet discovered the history of the ultralights and the many variations that are around?
Even today I am surprised by the geniuses that are able to down scale the original aircraft and recreate it to ultralight size and standards.
Parasails and paragliders, ultralight airplanes and aircraft, gyrocopters and helicopters, heck just the other day I saw a rubber ducky boat that had been fit with a wing and off it went.
The versatility of such aircraft is amazing.
Commercial use whether it be by farmers or graziers, tourism such as joy flights or taking a passenger to and from an island, use by the Police and/or the armed forces for training or taking an ultralight for the flight of your life.
The freedom and the pleasure of flying your craft around anywhere is liberating and exhilarating.
Have you ever experienced the thrill and freedom of a glider flight? Unfortunately I have not as yet.
However there is one thing that I do know and that is there are a lot of ultralight glider owners who are very satisfied with their aircraft. Why?
The cost. It always boils down to the cost!
Ultralight gliders are so much cheaper to purchase and maintain (as are all ultralights).
You still enjoy all the versatility of the full sized glider by making full use of thermals and gliding around for as long as possible before making your way back to the landing strip.
You could even purchase an ultralight aircraft and once you have reached good altitude, turn your engine/s off. Then enjoy the gliding experience that way. Quite looking forward to the day myself.
One such aircraft that a pilot could glide in is the Lazair Ultralight.
This amazing aircraft was created by an engineer while still at university.
The end result was an airplane that was 13' / 4 meters long, had a wing span of just over 36' or 11 meters was powered by two 9.5hp engines and had rear wings that very shaped like an upside down "V".
The good news about this aircraft is it is still very popular today.
When looking for quality, reliability and a manufacturer with a good name and therefore reputation you are looking for Quicksilver ultralights.
Quicksilver have been manufacturing ultralight for many years now and are represented in several countries worldwide.
Also renowned for being the world's largest supplier of ultralight trainers, Quicksilver manufacture and distribute aircraft, spare parts and information for pilots, owners and enthusiasts regularly.
What do you need to be able to build your very own ultralight?
First passion always helps.
Add to this mechanical skills and the ability to read plans. It may also be a good idea to have a friend who can assist as two heads are always better than one.
Finally you are going to need some cash and some (actually a lot) of time - about 50 hours I believe is standard.
If you are the type of person that is very good with your hands and/or you are a mechanic of some kind, then building your very own ultralight should not be too much of a problem for you.
Most ultralight aircraft manufacturers sell their airplanes in kit form.
So all you need do is purchase the plans and all the materials then set yourself some time aside to create your aircraft.
Of course these same manufacturers will build your airplane or helicopter for you (for a fee) thereby eliminating any problems you may stumble upon yourself.
You have a choice of Gyrocopters and Helicopters; Powered Parachutes and Paragliders; Weight Shift Aircraft or 2/3 Axis Fixed Wing Ultralight aircraft.
