The story is set in Kabul, Afghanistan (although the movie was shot in Kashgar, China).
It is based upon the story of a small boy Amir who turned his back on his friend Hassan when he was being attacked by other boys.
Throughout Amir's life he is continuously taunted by the images he witnessed of his friend's attack and how he Amir did nothing to help him. He knew that he had betrayed his good friend.
Due to the overwhelming circumstances of war and strife Amir's father Baba collects his only son and flees to America.
Then one day Amir receives a phone call requesting he return from The United States as Hassan has been killed by the Taliban and that his son Sohrab is still living in Afghanistan.
Amir sees this as the opportunity he has been waiting for to make things right for his now deceased friend.
Leaving his wife Soraya, Amir agrees to travel first to Pakistan to meet up with Rahim Khan who rang Amir advising him of the tragedies in Afghanistan.
From there he returns to attempt to locate Sohrab and bring him back to America with him.
