From the very beginning South West Airlines had an attitude to compete against and win their very own share of the airline industry's market.
Coming out of court victorious Rollin King and Herb Kelleher the founders of Southwest Airlines took to the skies with four Boeing 737-200s.
It's amazing what courage and determination can do.
So why yet another airline company? Well I guess their observations from personal experience and what they heard other existing passengers saying, they knew they could do a better job. Which is exactly what customers, passengers and other businesses are saying about Southwest.
South West Airlines Aircraft
Southwest and Boeing have good relations.
Southwest Airlines has been the launch customer for the Boeing 737-3/5 & 700 aircraft.
The purpose to only operate with one manufacturer i.e Boeing was to keep operation and maintenance costs to a minimum. This of course benefits Southwest and passengers by keeping air prices down.
Since commencement Southwest has purchased approx 735 brand new aircraft from Boeing which makes up an estimated 9% of total aircraft produced.
The aircraft that are still in operation as of April 2008 are:-
Boeing 737-300 (short to medium haul)
Boeing 737-500 (short haul)
Boeing 737-700 (all destinations)
These aircraft are used to carry approx 100 million passengers per annum to over sixty cities throughout 32 states of America.

What an amazing effort for an airline company which began flight operations in 1971!
As the Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 aircraft retire they are being replaced with brand new 737-700 airplanes.
Each existing and new 737-700 aircraft are currently being fit with winglets. The purpose behind this is again two-fold.
Firstly it gives the aircraft greater range thereby saving fuel and reducing maintenance costs as well as reducing engine take-off noise. Secondly it provides passengers with a more comfortable flight and keeps airline ticket prices down.
