Quantas Airlines

Quantas Airlines also known as Quantis Airlines and Quantus Airlines (correct title is Qantas Airways Ltd) started operations way back in 1920 in a 3 seater Avro 504K biplane and a BE2E biplane which were used for joyrides and as an air taxi.

Three men decided to get together to form the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services which was later abbreviated to QANTAS.

One of those men W Arthur Baird led the building of de Havilland DH50's which were to be later utilized by Qantas. These aircraft were built and serviced to a standard of excellence which still occurs today with all current aircraft.

Qantas are the only airline company worldwide that have ever built their own aircraft - that's amazing.

quantas airlines 01 QANTAS then joined with Imperial airways (which later became British Airways) to form Qantas Empire Airways.

Flights to Singapore from Darwin began in 1935 with Imperial Airways continuing the flight to London. These flights started in a de Havilland DH86's (pictured) and were later transferred to Shorts S.23 Empire Flying Boats.

In 1948 Qantas acquired the infamous Lockheed L.049 Constellations (or the Connie as she is still affectionately known as today).

Four years later flights to Johannesburg, Cocos Islands and Mauritius commenced.

The first of Qantas' Boeing 707s flew from Sydney to San Francisco in July 1959. Eight years later four Boeing 747's were ordered.

Also in 1967 Qantas Empire Airways became Qantas Airways Ltd.
