Light Sport Aircraft

aircraft light sport 01

In the USA the light sport aircraft (LSA) are practically the same as what most other countries classify as the ultralight aircraft.

There are however some variations such as:-

* The gross max. takeoff weight under 600kg for land based aircraft and 649kg for amphibious aircraft or seaplanes.

* Maximum flat level flight speed of 120 knots.

* Maximum stall speed of 45 knots.

* Either one or two seater.

* Fixed undercarriage.

* Fixed pitch or ground adjustable propeller; and

* A single reciprocating engine.

All that is required is a Sports Pilot certificate or a private, recreational or higher certificate/license to fly this aircraft.

The light sport classification includes airplanes, gyroplanes, powered parachutes (paragliders), weight-shift control aircraft, balloons and airships.

Worldwide there are many manufacturers of the light sport airplane and aircraft.

These manufacturers are located in countries such as USA, Canada, Italy, Australia, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, France and Hungary.

Therefore any person whether an up and coming student or a veteran pilot is able to purchase a new or used light sport or ultralight aircraft from anywhere in the world.

Flying schools, clubs, associations and forums are also easily available.

It is a good idea to join one or more of these for the benefits of being a club member which entitles you to information, recreational activities such as airshows and tours of airbases, special prices on new or used aircraft and spare parts to name a few.

Experimental light sport aircraft (E-LSA)

An (LSA) that is built from kits or a plans built aircraft can be licensed as an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA).

FAA requirements state that the aircraft must be maintained and inspected as an amateur built aircraft.

The annual inspection and maintenance must also be completed by either the manufacturer or a LSA repairman with an inspection rating and/or a maintaining rating, an airframe and powerplant (A & P) mechanic or a certified repair station.Further regulations for the operation of an E-LSA are here.

There are a few websites around that give you all the start-up assistance you need to start building your very own light sport aircraft.

You can either purchase ready made or as aircraft kits.

The kits come with all precut, drilled and ready to assemble parts complete with drawings.

Some manufacturers distribute their kits in sections i.e rudder kit, cockpit kit etc so that you can purchase as time and money allows.

Also if you wish your aircraft built for you and shipped ready made, this also can be done for you relatively cheaply.
