Boeing Satellite Systems Inc originated in 1961 and two years later the first of their satellites named Syncom was launched. This placed Boeing, the commercial airplane company into the satellite manufacturing industry.
Since that time Boeing has constructed more than 200 commercial satellites which are used for communication networks in addition to satellites used for weather and meteorological information and national security.
Design, construction, testing and quality control systems all take place in Boeing's Integration and Test Complex (ITC) which is located at Seal Beach California USA.
The ITC and the Satellite Development Center (SDC) which is located at El Segundo California make-up the entire satellite manufacturing for Boeing Satellite System. The ITC is the world's largest satellite factory occupying approx. 1 million square feet.
As well as owning the world's largest satellite factory, Boeing Satellite Systems Inc have achieved world firsts in several areas.
The launch of Syncom in 1963 was the world's first geosynchronous communications satellite.
Boeing is the world's leading manufacturer of geostationary satellite and geosynchronous commercial communications satellites with more than 12 spacecraft in construction at any given time.
Boeing own the world's most powerful communications satellite - the Boeing 702. It has the best capacity, performance and is the most cost-efficient satellite.
The Boeing 601 satellite is the world's best selling large spacecraft.
The Boeing 376 spin-stabilized spacecraft is one of the world's most purchased commercial communications satellite.
Within the ITC Boeing has the world's largest thermal vacuum chambers equipped to test two Boeing 702's simultaneously. While fully powered each satellite is put through heat tests thereby simulating the effects of the sun and cold tests to simulate the coldness of space. Wall temperatures ranging from -320 degrees to +250 degrees Farenheit can be reached.
Boeing GEO mobile communication satellite system
One of the Boeing communication satellites currently in use is the Boeing GEM satellite.
This satellite was launched in 2000 and it's footprint or coverage includes the Middle East, North and Central Africa, Europe, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. Ltd purchased two GEM satellites which have the capacity to process 13750 voice circuits each.
Boeing weather satellites and instruments
The Boeing 601 satellite is widely used amongst communication companies to receive and transmit signals from mobile phones, faxes and internet usage.
The versatility of this satellite means that when fitted with different sensors we can now take images of the Earth including immediate weather patterns, cloud formations, surface and air temperatures and the spread of water vapor.
Basically this means that storm warnings whether it be a hurricane, cyclone or a severe storm can be announced prior to reaching populated areas.
Also these satellites will be able to detect distress signals from ships and airplanes.
